The needlepoint world has hundreds of thread lines, all for different purposes. We know it can get confusing! That's why we created this handy guide to help you pick the perfect threads for your project.

Threads like Silk & Ivory or Milan provide beautiful coverage on the larger holes of a 13 mesh canvas. Planet Earth Wool, Planet Earth Silk, and DMC Pearl Cotton 3 can also be great choices depending on your vision for the canvas and how you'd like to finish it. We're happy to talk through all of the options and find the right fit for your canvas.
18 mesh canvas has smaller holes that allow for more detail within the design, so thinner threads are needed. Essentials, Vineyard Silk, and Pepper Pot are our go-tos here, and DMC Pearl Cotton 5 is a great starting point. If you have questions about what to use on your canvas, we're always happy to help!
Speciality threads like metallics, velvets, variegated fibers, and ribbons help a canvas find its personality. They work beautifully alongside any of your classic threads. Figuring out the best way to add speciality threads to your project is one of our favorite things to help with when kitting a canvas!

Cotton is strong, durable, and consistent. It is the most affordable thread choice making it a great starting point for new stitchers.
A softer thread that provides a beautiful sheen.
Silk adds a beautiful luminous quality to your canvas that no other thread can quite replicate. It is a dream to stitch with and is well-suited for many different types of projects!
Durable & full coverage.
Wool has historically been the backbone of the needlepoint world for good reason. It's durable, full coverage, and can stand the test of time!
The best qualities of both fibers in one thread.
Silk and wool blends stitch with the durability and body of wool while also providing just enough sheen to give your finished piece a little life. Our most popular thread lines!
Metallics add sparkle and dimension that can really bring your project to life.
They can be a bit finicky to work with, but the final product will be well worth it! Add little bits here and there or stitch a project in full sparkle!
Velvet thread creates a texture unlike anything else in your stash.
This thread adds a softness that looks even better than it feels. We recommend using it for animals, bows, clothing, or anywhere you'd like a change in texture!

Thread choice depends on your canvas mesh count and the look you want. We notate which mesh count each of our thread lines is best used for (both in our shop and on our website)! When in doubt, bring in your canvas or send us a text or email, and we'll help you figure it out!
Yes! Mixing different threads and textures is one of the best ways to bring a canvas to life!
It depends on the canvas size, mesh count, and how many colors you're working with. When kitting your canvas, we always make sure to provide the correct amount of threads. If you need help figuring out amounts, reach out to us and we'll be happy to help!
Multi-ply threads are made up of multiple strands twisted or grouped together, and you can separate them to adjust coverage. Single-ply threads (also referred to as cut-and-go threads) come as one strand and are used as-is.
Some speciality threads can be a little tricky to work with since they're prone to fraying or tangling. Shortening the length of the strand you are working with and using a thread conditioner can make a big difference.
Things like quality and color value do vary across brands. We carry threads we love and trust and are happy to talk through the differences!
We encourage beginners to start with our silk & wool blends. They are our most popular thread lines and are very easy to work with. We also love to include a specialty thread or two. We want your first project to be something you absolutely love and are proud to display for years and years to come!
Though embroidery floss tends to be more popular for cross-stitch and hand embroidery, it can certainly be used for needlepoint as well. It tends to be finer and may require multiple strands for good coverage. We're all about what works best for you!
