New to needlepoint? You're in the right place! Here's what you need to know before you pick up your first canvas.
Canvases
Your canvas is the foundation of your project. The mesh count, 13 or 18, tells you how many holes per square inch and will also determine which threads will work best. Not sure where to begin? We can help you find a canvas that matches both your style and skill level!
Threads
Thread choice comes down to your canvas count and the finish you're after. Wool is forgiving and durable, silk brings a beautiful sheen, and silk blends give you a little of both. Not sure where to start? We love helping stitchers build a palette, just ask!
Tools
You don't need much to get started: a needle, a pair of scissors, and something to keep your canvas taut (try adding our favorite stretcher bars at checkout or in store!). A good set of tools makes a big difference, and we're happy to walk you through what's worth having from day one.
Canvas Basics
Understanding Mesh Size
Mesh size refers to the number of holes per inch on your canvas...so a 13 mesh canvas has 13 stitches per inch while 18 mesh has 18. The smaller the mesh size, the larger the holes. If you're just starting out, 13 mesh is a great place to start!
What Type of Needle Is Best?
Tapestry Needles
Tapestry needles have a rounded tip and a large eye, which makes them easy to thread and gentle on your canvas. The size you need depends on your mesh count. Use size 20 for 13 mesh canvases and size 22 for 18 mesh.

The thread you choose will depend on the mesh count of your canvas and the finish you're looking for. Wool is durable, silk has a beautiful sheen, and silk/wool blends give you a little bit of both. Mesh size refers to the number of holes per inch. 13 mesh has larger holes making it a great starting point. 18 mesh has smaller holes which allows for more detail but works up more slowly.
It's always better to have a little more than you need. When we kit a canvas for you (you can choose that option when shopping our canvases!), we make sure you're covered! If you're buying in store, our team is always happy to help you determine the correct amounts!
Yes! Mixing different threads and textures adds dimension and interest to your finished piece! We love helping our customers decide what threads to use where!
Stretcher bars are not required, but they do keep your canvas taut helping your finished piece to remain straight. They are a simple, affordable option and a good habit to build from the start, but some stitchers love stitching "in hand" without bars. It's personal preference, and we're all about what works best for you!
Mistakes happen, and we're here to help! Most stitches can be ripped out using a seam ripper (be careful not to cut your canvas) and redone!
